July 3, 2018Summer Celebrations with the University of Manchester

We were a huge hit with the students!
This week marked the end of the summer term for many students at the University of Manchester. After months of hard work, it was finally time for these young men and women to take a well-earned break, relax and enjoy themselves. Now, we at Austin’s Ices are masters of the feelgood vibe. If there’s one thing we know as one of the leading mobile ice cream vendors in Greater Manchester, it’s how to have fun!
Clearly our reputation precedes us, because we recently got a call from the prestigious educational institution. To reward students for their dedication and efforts throughout the academic year, UoM wanted to hire one of our lovely ice cream vans to visit some of their halls of residence. Much like ourselves, they felt that a healthy dose of cold, sugary refreshment was the perfect way to unwind after a stressful few months of exams and deadlines.

Our iced goodies were the perfect accompaniment to the sunshine
Our first stop was at Oak House, one of the main student halls, located in Fallowfield. A thriving and student-heavy neighbourhood, Fallowfield is always a hive of activity. And considering that the weather on the day happened to consist of cloudless cyan skies and glorious sunshine, we were quietly optimistic about the odds of a good turnout. Thankfully, Oak Hose Residents did not let us down. In fact, we eventually lost count of how many people we served overall. Suffice to say, there must have been at least 800 present. Mr Whippy is incredibly popular with the student crowd, it seems. And we can’t say we’re surprised!
We were back in Fallowfield a few days later, this time spending a couple of hours at Woolton Hall. While we’d previously had the privilege of being the star attraction at Oak House, there was some stiff competition today! There was absolutely loads to do, including possibly our biggest rival for residents’ affections – a bucking bronco. Always a sure-fire way to bring the fun, the bronco captured everyone’s attention one way or another. The students were loving it, and we had to chuckle or at some of their failed attempts to tame the beast. For those who fancied for a less intense way to blow off some steam, there was a bouncy castle on hand – a slightly less exhilarating spectacle, but a joyful one nonetheless.

A bouncy castle and inflatable slide to amp up the fun
Eventually the adrenaline rush would subside, and the need cool off would set in. We knew that was our time to shine, and we revelled in the opportunity to satisfy a crowd the way only Austin’s Ices can. Throughout the afternoon, the guys and girls of Woolton Hall regularly flocked to us, looking to indulge in their favourite chilled treat. The weather was once again fantastic, which surely made huge our array of icy confections taste even sweeter.
It was such an enjoyable few days, meeting plenty of new faces and making it our mission to help hundreds of bright young minds kickstart their summer holidays with a bang. Students of Manchester, you are welcome. School’s out!
